Most Americans buy the house they hate the least. In an effort to help improve the quality of builders' houses, Life Magazine inaugurated its annual "Dream House" feature by commissioning a design for a small, affordable house from us. A compact shingled mass relieved by porches, shuttered windows and dormers, our house was planned to meet a number of different but typical site conditions. Additionally, different levels of detailing and finish appropriate to a wide variety of building budgets were possible.
The house proved to be very popular, with Life offering its readers the opportunity to purchase working drawings. As a result, many variations have been built across the country without our direct involvement. But one example was constructed under our supervision by a developer, Macauley Homes, in the Legacy Park planned neighborhood in Kennesaw, Georgia, just outside of Atlanta.
